2 Samuel 9:1 “Is there yet anyone left in the house of Saul, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
Observation: David deeply valued and honored the covenant he shared with Jonathan. In 1 Samuel 20:42, Jonathan said, “The Lord will be between me and you, and between my descendents and your descendents forever.” Now, Jonathan was dead, and as far as David knew, there were no living descendents. To find out for sure, David contacted a servant who had worked in Saul’s household, and the servant told David of the survival of Mephibosheth, a crippled son of Jonathan’s.
Application: The beautiful thing about this passage is that David determined to carry out his covenant promise to Jonathan. David viewed his commitment as irrevocable, and he purposed to fulfill it without regard to what kind of person Jonathan’s offspring may have been. David would keep the covenant regardless of the worthiness or unworthiness of Mephibosheth. And talk about extravagant generosity! David restored to Mephibosheth not only what had belonged to his father Jonathan, but even the far more extensive holdings of his grandfather, King Saul.
What a beautiful picture of the Lord’s covenant promise to me, that He will make me His bride and restore all that was lost when the first Adam sinned. He lavishly promises all that He is, I will become, sealed for eternity at the wedding supper of the Lamb. Compared to Him, I come as the crippled Mephibosheth, yet he has for me an ostentatious inheritance that is irrevocably mine. David withheld nothing; in fact, he no doubt delighted to see the look of astonishment as Mephibosheth began to understand the scope of the king’s generosity. In the same way, I too am stunned as day-by-day I gain added understanding of what it means to be a child of the king.
Prayer: Father, the lavishness of Your inheritance for me blows me away. What I have seen of it is staggering, yet I know I have caught but a glimpse. Like Mephibosheth, I am utterly unworthy, yet You chose to elevate me to Your side through Your everlasting covenant as my Bridegroom. How I love You!
